Bactrim is rapidly absorbed after oral administration and peak blood levels occur 1 to 4 hours after oral administration. Sulfamethoxazole has a mean serum half life of 10 hours. Trimethoprim has a mean serum half life of 8 to 10 hours. Bactrim’s components – sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim – are primarily excreted by the kidneys.
