Diltiazem (Cardizem), like nifedipine and verapamil, is a calcium ion cellular influx inhibitor, also known as a slow calcium channel blocker. Diltiazem is thought to work during membrane depolarization of vascular and cardiac smooth muscle by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions. Diltiazem decreases peripheral vascular resistance which helps explain its effect on blood pressure. Diltiazem decreases conduction in the heart (sinoatrial and atrioventricular) and is thought to prevent coronary artery spasm.
Diltiazem – Side Effects
Like all medications, diltiazem and its branded versions can cause side effects. The most common side effects associated with diltiazem use are edema, headache, dizziness, nausea and rash. Diltiazem should be avoided by people who have had a hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to it previously. People with specific types of heart blocks and hypotension should also not use diltiazem. Diltiazem interacts with other medications and care should be taken by people taking other medications before using diltiazem. Diltiazem and alcohol should not be used together. Side effects and concerns related to diltiazem use should be discussed with one’s medical provider and pharmacist prior to starting the medication
Generic diltiazem and branded diltiazem tablets are quite affordable, typically under twenty cents per pill at many pharmacies. Additionally, insurance plans sometimes cover the cost of diltiazem if one cannot afford to pay out of pocket. Also, diltiazem coupons may be available online or from the manufacturer to further reduce the cost of the medication. Farmington Drugs & Medical Supplies takes pride in offering the most cost efficient services and prescriptions to our patients.
Diltiazem hydrochloride is the form of diltiazem found in Cardizem and is a bitter, white to off-white crystalline powder. Cardizem tablets consist of diltiazem hydrochloride 30 mg, diltiazem hydrochloride 60 mg, diltiazem hydrochloride 90 mg and diltiazem hydrochloride 120 mg tablets. When administered orally, diltiazem is well absorbed and is largely bound to proteins in the plasma. The plasma elimination half-life of diltiazem is up to 4.5 hours and is eventually excreted in the bile and by the kidneys after undergoing liver metabolism. Cardizem (diltiazem) tablets should generally be stored at 25° C.
