Usage
Fluticasone propionate belongs to a class of medications known as corticosteroids – similar to other medications such as Qvar. Fluticasone nasal spray is used in the management of the nasal symptoms of perennial nonallergic rhinitis is adults and certain pediatric patients. Fluticasone propionate has anti-inflammatory activity and binds to human glucocorticoid receptors. The exact mechanism of how fluticasone propionate affects symptoms related to rhinitis is unknown. The starting dose of fluticasone in adults is generally two sprays per nostril daily for a total of 200 mcg per day of fluticasone. Fluticasone propionate is mostly bound to plasma proteins and has a terminal half-life of approximately 7.8 hours. The effectiveness of fluticasone propionate generally depends on regular use. Fluticasone is meant for intranasal use only. Fluticasone propionate is found as a white powder that is practically insoluble in water. As a nasal spray, fluticasone is an aqueous suspension of microfine fluticasone propionate that is delivered using an atomizing spray pump. Fluticasone nasal spray should be stored between 4° and 30° C. Fluticasone is also combined with salmeterol in the medication Advair.
