Usage
How does glipizide work? Glipizide is used in diabetes management and indicated in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus for improving glycemic control as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Glucotrol (glipizide) is thought to work by stimulating the beta cells of the pancreatic islet tissue to secrete insulin. By increasing the secretion of insulin, glipizide is thought to lower blood glucose levels. Glipizide and metformin are sometimes used together for better blood glucose management.

Dosage
Glipizide belongs to a class of medications known as sulfonylurea medications. Glipizide is an important ingredient in Glucotrol. Glipizide is a white, odorless powder that is insoluble in water. For many patients, the starting dose used is 5 mg before breakfast and dosage adjustments are done in 2.5 mg increments. Glucotrol tablets are white, dye-free scored available as 5 mg tablets and 10 mg tablets. While the elimination half-life of glipizide is up to 4 hours, some people experience blood sugar control for as long as 24 hours after a dose. Peak plasma concentrations after an oral dose occur within 3 hours.
