Usage
What is Linzess used for? Linzess (linaclotide) belongs to a class of medications known as guanylate cyclase-C agonists and is a 14-amino acid peptide. Linzess is used in the management of constipation in adults with chronic idiopathic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation. Linaclotide, along with some of its metabolites, bind to the surface of the intestines, resulting in metabolic changes which increase the secretion of chloride and bicarbonate into the intestinal lumen. Through these secretions, linaclotide is thought to increase transit of fluids in the intestines and reduce pain. Following administration, the systemic availability of Linzess is low and plasma concentrations of linaclotide are not measurable. Some linaclotide is excreted in the stool.
