Lipitor is a medication that contains atorvastatin calcium. Lipitor is used in a variety of patients, including adults without coronary heart disease who have certain risk factors for coronary heart disease, certain patients with type 2 diabetes, and patients with clinically evident coronary heart disease. Lipitor is also frequently used in patients with hypercholesterolemia to reduce elevated total-C, LDL-C, apo B, and TG levels and to increase HDL-C, in patients with high triglyceride levels in the serum, and various other situations. Lipitor is an inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase and is also similar to Livalo, rosuvastatin (Crestor) and simvastatin. Before using Lipitor tablets and while using Lipitor, patients should utilize a cholesterol-lowering diet.
