More information

  • Usage

What is omeprazole used for? Omeprazole, or Prilosec, is a proton pump inhibitor similar to Dexilant, Nexium and pantoprazole (Protonix). Prilosec is generally indicated for short-term treatment of duodenal ulcer and gastric ulcer in adults and the treatment of gastroesophageal disease (GERD) – also sometimes known as acid reflux. In combination with other medications, Prilosec is sometimes used in the treatment of H. pylori infections. Omeprazole is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is slightly soluble in water. Omeprazole magnesium, another form of omeprazole is a white to off white powder as well. Omeprazole degrades rapidly in acid media. After oral ingestion, omeprazole demonstrates an antisecretory effect within one hour and a maximal effect within two hours. The duration of secretion inhibition is roughly three days. Omeprazole is metabolized by the CYP enzyme system and the majority is excreted in the urine.

  • Omeprazole – Side Effects

A number of drug-drug interactions also exist with omeprazole and Prilosec and one should be careful using these drugs if currently taking other medications.
