Vascepa belongs to a class of compounds known as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) which is related to omega-3 fatty acids (similar to Lovaza). Vascepa itself is an ethyl ester of EPA and is used as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglyceride levels in certain adult patients. Vascepa is thought to work by reducing the synthesis of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) triglycerides in the liver. Vascepa may also increase clearance of triglycerides. Vascepa’s actions may be partially due to increase enzyme activity. It is recommended that any underlying medical conditions be controlled as well as possible before starting Vascepa and that medications known to raise triglyceride levels be changed or discontinued.
Vascepa – Side Effects
Vascepa can cause side effects when used. Side effects related to Vascepa use include arthralgia and prolonged bleeding time. People who have had a hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to Vascepa or its ingredients or have an allergy to fish or shellfish should not use the medication. Vascepa and alcohol should not be used at the same time. It is not known whether people with very high triglyceride levels will be at an increased risk of pancreatitis while using Vascepa. Before using Vascepa, patients should discuss possible side effects with a pharmacist and their medical provider.
Vascepa is not inexpensive, costing just over $2 per Vascepa 1 gram tablet at many pharmacies. Vascepa coupons are available online and some insurance plans may also cover some or all of the cost. Farmington Drugs & Medical Supplies takes pride in offering the most cost efficient services and prescriptions to our patients.
After oral administration, Vascepa is absorbed in the small intestine and transported to the body via the lymphatic system. Approximately 5 hours after administration, Vascepa reaches its peak concentration in the plasma and its metabolites are incorporated into cholesterol esters, triglycerides and phospholipids. Vascepa is metabolized in the liver and has an elimination half-life of roughly 89 hours. Often, Vascepa is prescribed to achieve a dose of Vascepa 4 grams daily, taken as two Vascepa 1 gram capsules or 4 Vascepa 0.5 gram capsules twice a day. Vascepa can be taken with food and the capsules should be swallowed whole. Vascepa capsules are amber and soft and available in 0.5 gram and 1 gram capsules. Vascepa tablets should be stored between 20° C and 25° C.
