Victoza (liraglutide) belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1 receptor agonists. Liraglutide is an analog of human GLP-1 and is produced using a process involving recombinant DNA expression. The GLP-1 receptor is found on cell surfaces. Victoza (liraglutide) works by increasing cyclic AMP inside the cell, resulting in the release of insulin and also decreasing the secretion of glucagon. Liraglutide has a half life in the plasma of 13 hours after administration subcutaneously. Victoza is in a similar class of medications as Ozempic and Trulicity.
Victoza – Side Effects
Victoza (liraglutide), like other medications, can cause side effects. Side effects from Victoza use include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, decreased appetite and dyspepsia. Victoza can delay gastric emptying and Victoza and alcohol should not be used together. People with hypersensitivity or allergy to Victoza (liraglutide) should not use the medication. Victoza should not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or in people with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2. Possible side effects secondary to Victoza use should be discussed with one’s medical provider and pharmacist.
Victoza (Iiraglutide) is an expensive medication, costing up to $350 per Victoza pen at many pharmacies. Victoza coupons may be available online at times to reduce the cost of the medication. Victoza is typically administered once daily independent of meals. The initial starting dose is generally Iiraglutide 0.6 mg but depends on the judgment of the prescribing medical provider. Victoza and Weight Loss
